Is your idea new?

Have you had a lightbulb moment about a potentially new product, service or brand? Is your idea life-changing? And not just for you?

Intellectual property rights exist to protect new products and services, and importantly, the development of your ideas. But first of all, how do you know if your idea is new and what options are available to protect it?

If you think your idea is new, have a look around to see if it is actually unique. Conduct thorough internet based searches using publically available patent databases or searching tools, and seek out early advice from a patent or trade mark attorney who can discuss what options are available to protect your idea and undertake appropriate searching on your behalf if required.

Importantly, don’t talk to anyone about your idea before you have sought advice.

If you find something similar has been done before, ask yourself whether your idea can improve on what already exists, and how different it is. Does your idea solve a problem? Can you fund it, or source investors or grants? Does it fill a niche market?

All of these questions are worth asking yourself, or having a discussion with a patent or trade mark attorney at Madderns. It’s our business to help yours. We are the intellectual property experts when it comes to patents, trade marks and designs.

We are able to assist you in Australia and internationally. Visit our team page to determine who might be able to help you with your great idea.
