David is a registered Patent and Trade Marks Attorney with a background in mechanical engineering. At Madderns, David is a member of the Engineering team, with a focus on local and foreign patent, trade mark and design drafting and prosecution – assisting engineers, inventors and innovators across a range of disciplines to obtain protection for their new inventions and brands.

David joined Madderns after completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) degree at the University of Adelaide, where he graduated with first class honours having undertaken elective courses in computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, sustainable thermal technology, composites and multiphase polymers, and corrosion principles and prevention.

David was a member of an honours team responsible for the successful design and build of an experimental gas turbine combustor implementing MILD (Moderate or Intense Low-oxygen Dilution) combustion, and participated in a research program, assisting in the design of an experimental welding rig for use in the investigation of failure modes of manual metal arc-welded steel pipeline.

Previously, David studied at the University of South Australia and obtained a Bachelor of Business (Property), with which he practised for four years in the commercial property domain.

David is a passionate motorsports fan and has a keen interest in automotive engineering and mechanical design. He represented the University of Adelaide on two occasions at the annual Formula SAE Australasia competition, being part of a team responsible for the design and build of two formula-style open wheel racing cars.
