Louise is a Partner at Madderns, and she leads our Trade Marks Team.

With more than 20 years of experience in intellectual property law, Louise works with businesses to protect, manage and defend their valuable brands in Australia and internationally. This includes filing and prosecuting trade mark applications and representing clients in trade mark opposition and cancellation proceedings.

Louise has particular expertise with wine trade marks and in the food and drinks sector. She also works with businesses across a diverse range of other industries including automobiles, clothing, cosmetics, healthcare, software and sports.

Louise commenced working in intellectual property in 2000. Prior to joining Madderns in 2007, Louise spent 5 years working as an intellectual property/commercial lawyer at a large Australasian law firm, and just under 2 years working at intellectual property firms in London.

Since 2014, Louise has been named as a leading trade mark professional in the annual World Trade Mark Review 1000, and listed as a Trade Mark “IP Star” in Managing Intellectual Property’s annual World IP Survey. In 2020, Louise was named South Australia’s “Lawyer of the Year” for Intellectual Property Law by Best Lawyers. Also in 2020, Madderns was recognised as “Australian Trade Mark Firm of the Year” by World Trade Mark Review and IAM.

Louise has a Master of Laws (specialising in intellectual property law) from Melbourne University, a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice (with Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts (Spanish/Japanese) from Flinders University. She has also completed the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

Louise is a member and past Chair of the South Australian Committee for the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ), and a Fellow of the Institute of Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys (IPTA). She is also a member of the Bulletins Committee for the International Trademarks Association (INTA) which is responsible for publishing international news in relation to trade marks and intellectual property.
